Saiva Prakasa Sabha

Saiva Prakasa Sabha is a charitable Society registered under the Travancore – Cochin Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act 1955.(Number)

It was established by Eminent Scholars and Literary Giants in Thiruvananthapuram, the Capital of Kerala in the year 1885 with the main objective of of conserving and promoting the Tamil culture and tradition, Literature, Philosophy and Social Welfare.

Milestones in the History of SPS

1.   A plot of land was purchased in M G Road and started functioning in 1885 on Tamil New Year day.

2.   Sabha mandapam for activities was constructed in the year 1886.

3.   Centenary celebration was organised in the year 1985.

4.   A two storey building was constructed and started functioning from 1974.

5.   A plot of land was purchased near Killipalam where Tamil speaking people were living predominantly.

6.   A Two storey building was constructed.

7.   A community hall was constructed

8.   Quasquicentennial celebration was organised during 2011.

Major Activities of SPS

Skanda Sashti Festival

 

One of the most important Annual Festival of the Sabha to commemorate the trimph of Lord Muruga's victory over the demon Soorapadman. The program is organized with rituals including, fasting, chanting, prayers and reciting Skanda Sashti Kavasam and Shunmuga kavasam. These six days are considered to be the most auspicious days to worship Lord Muruga and also for getting good fortune. Normally the celebration is conducted for six days. The festival falls on the 6th day of the bright fortnight (Shukla paksham )in the month of Aipasi (October to November). During these days several programs of music, discourses and debates are organised for the benefit of public. Prior to the festival, competitions are organized on various topics for the students, women folk and youth. Prizes are distributed to them on the concluding day of the festival.

 

 

 

Paavai vizha

 

It is a Festival of Women, organized during the month of Margazhi. During this month they wake up early everyday, take bath, wear clean clothes, go to temples and participate in the Bhajans organised in community hall of Saiva Prakasa Sabha. During the bajan, they sing the songs of THIRUPPAVAI authored by AANDAL and THIRUVEMPAAVAI composed by Manickavasakar. As the Thirupaavai pasuram says, women spend the fasting period by refraining from doing bad deeds, doing good deeds, and praising and singing the praises of God with the divine thoughts at all times. On all the Thirty days, the Sabha organises programs in a grand manner with discourses, debates and dances.

 

Maha Shivaratri

 

MAHASHIVRATRI means GREAT NIGHT OF SHIVA, is the most significant Festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is celebrated annually between February and March. According to Hindu calendar the festival is observed on the 14th day of the first half of the lunar month of palguna. On this day the devotees celebrate this function with fasting, prayers and temple visits. The festival signifies several events important to devotees. Shivaratri commemorates the wedding night of Lord Shiva to Goddess Parvathi. Thus it is a festival particularly marked for Married couples. During this night, Lord Shiva as Nataraja the Lord of Dance, first perform the Dance of Bliss - the Anandhathandava. Ardent devotees stay awake throughout the night and participate in pujas and make visits to Shiva temples. On this day Saiva Prakasa Sabha organizes recitation programs and THIRUVASAKAM READING PROGRAM, which was composed by Manickavasakar.

 

 

 

Founders day

Every year, in commemoration of the contribution of the founder leaders, programs are organised by Sabha. On this day seminar, discussion sessions are organised and the proceedings are published.

 

Library

One of the major activity of the Sabha is maintaining a resourceful library for spiritual guidance and progress. It contains more than 10000 books in various fields like Saiva siddantham, Indian Philosophies, Rare Publications of various Adheenam and eminent personalities. It is functioning as reference library for Research Scholars.

Publications

The sabha is regularly publishing books and booklets for the benefit of Saiva Siddantha students and public.So far the institution has published 5 seminar proceedings and 12 books and booklets authored by various Tamil Scholars.

Centenary celebration and publication of seminar proceedings

The Centenary celebrations of the Sabha were held in great Splendor in September 1985 and released Centenary seminar proceedings which is something that should be engraved in golden letters in the history of Sabha. The five day Festival was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Minister Sri R.M.Veerappan. The concert of famous violin artist Kunnakudi Vaidhyanathan was unforgettable and captivated everyone. The articles presented in the seminar and the proceedings were compiled and published as  five different unitss.

Establishment of community center at Killipalam, Trivandrum

With the aim of expanding the activities of Sabha, 35 cents of land was purchased near Killipalam Junction, an area where Tamil speaking people are living predominantly. Within a short period Community hall have been constructed under the able leadership of the then President Sri K.Raveendran and the Board of Directors. The building was inaugurated by the then Kerala governor B.RACHAIAH. Now adays several programs are organised at this hall
